Our Services

One of its major services is highlight. Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital is the first local private hospital to provide 24/7 hyperacute stroke service and intra-arterial thrombectomy for ischaemic stroke patients. Supported by a multidisciplinary team of specialists in emergency medicine, intensive care, cardiology interventionist, radiology, speech therapy, physiotherapy, clinical psychology, etc., the Acute Stroke Activation Programme (ASAP) is committed to delivering total care to acute ischaemic stroke patients with state-of-the-art treatment followed by stroke rehabilitation and secondary stroke prevention.

The programme was first launched in 2016 as ASAP 1.0 with the aim of providing intravenous thrombolytic therapy to acute ischaemic stroke patients within 3 hours of onset. ASAP 2.0 refers to treating patients who are not responsive or not fit for intravenous therapy by intra-arterial thrombectomy technique. The upgraded AI-enhanced cerebrovascular imaging system (RapidAI software) provides prompt and accurate information to facilitate treatment decision by our neurologists and neurosurgeons. Time window for treatment can also be extended to beyond 3 hours in carefully selected patients.

Patient Information on Acute Stroke Activation Programme (ASAP)
There are two types of acute stroke: ischaemic stroke due to interruption of blood flow to the brain, and haemorrhagic stroke due to bleeding into the brain. Ischaemic stroke is caused by a blood clot cutting off the blood supply to an area of the brain, depriving the brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. As a result, the brain tissue suffers damage and eventually dies. The effect of acute stroke depends on the location and severity of brain tissue damage. Severe stroke may result in significant permanent disability or even death.
